When Working Men Unite

For this episode of the Pod Jim Slaven chats to Jimmy Yan, a researcher in Melbourne whose work explores the influence of the Irish revolutionary period of 1913-1923 on social radicalism in Australia. The episode focuses on the case of two sacked workers, Alex Morrison and Tom Wilson. Who were sacked after they proposed and seconded a motion which was passed by the conference of the Australian Railways Union, condemning the murder of three Irish railway workers by the Black and Tans in County Cork in 1921.
Both sacked workers were Scottish Protestants and their sacking and the subsequent defence campaign allow for a broader examination of the political and social context of Irish solidarity networks within the diaspora and the Socialist and Trades Union movements engagements with the Irish revolution.
It’s a story of race, class, international solidarity and of history from below.
The title of this episode comes from one of Alex Morrison’s poems which Jimmy Yan reads during the podcast.

They discuss what this discovery means for Connolly scholarship and our understanding of James Connolly, his life and times, and his political and cultural development. The full text of The Agitator’s Wife has kindly been reproduced by Cowgate Republic and listeners can read it here.
